Ecuador
The celebration of New Year in Ecuador, is celebrated in all the cities of that country, mainly with the tradition of burning the old year or monigote, a fact that means to leave behind the negative experiences of last year, and to welcome a new one, with the hope that it is better than the previous one. The burning of the old year has a very old background and occurs in many places in the world, it was already in the Babylonian, Greek and Roman cultures.
For example, Rome worshiped Prometheus with the custom of making figures of man, birds and animals that were later incinerated to represent the vices of humanity. This tradition passed through several towns submitted by Rome, including Spain. Therefore, Ecuador too (since it was a country conquered by Spain). The first data about the existence of old years in our country are from 1895, when an epidemic of yellow fever hit the people of Guayaquil. As a sanitary measure, they tied bundles of straw and branches with the clothes of the deceased relatives, to burn them in the street on the last day of the year and thus drive away plague and despair. It is the representation of the old and the beginning of the new, of leaving the past and projecting the future.
This through dolls, known as old years or puppets made with sawdust. Another tradition that takes place in Ecuador, is that of widows, which is that men dress as women with wigs and makeup, they go out into the streets, dance with other men, and ask for money.
Each year the widows, and heirs accompany the old man until the last minute, when he finishes, his notary read the testament to distribute all the inheritance accumulated during the year, by which he leaves goods, qualities, defects and penalties, thus making known what happened in the testament, which is nothing other than a critical evaluation of what was lived with much humor.
In different cities of Ecuador competitions of old years are realized, many of which are traditional for more than 40 years. 5 years ago we can appreciate these large size puppets on the 2,000 seawall with legends or testaments of the most outstanding events both nationally and internationally.
Finished burning the old years, the whole family will sit down to have the baked Turkey or Baked suckling pig and wine or champagne, to toast the arrival of the new year. This way it is represented that in the new year there will not be a lack of food in abundance, but not in all homes it will be like that with a good bread you are happy while you are in union with the family. Another tradition is to go around the block with suitcases to go on a trip and discover new places, wear yellow underwear and attract good luck with this color.
Scotland
In Scotland the new year is celebrated with the hogmanay, which is the biggest celebration of winter. This event consists of pagan and ancestral traditions with modern festivals, such as fireworks, just like Ecuador, torchlight parades, bonfires, among many others. On December 31, the flames burst into the cold to scare away the evil spirits of the year and to release January with renewed enthusiasm.
At midnight on December 31, the carriers, or swingers, parade down the main street, High Street. Around their bodies they spin fireballs made of wire and filled with a combustible mixture. In addition a song is sung when the midnight of December 31 gives way to the first day of the new year, the people of Scotland shake hands and sing the year-end song par excellence: Auld Lang Syne, which is based on a poem written in 1788 by the Scottish poet Robert Burns.
By the following, the old night, families gather at home to dine before going to any of the festivities or midnight masses, it is also typical to serve rich and consistent meals, such as stewed beef or venison, steak pie ( meatloaf) or roast beef (roast beef). There is also a lack of haggis, which is the typical dish of Scotland, a spicy sausage made from the lung, liver and heart of sheep or lamb, with neeps and tatties (mashed potato and turnip) or rumbledethumps (a dish made from potato, cabbage, onion and butter with gratin cheese). The food is accompanied by a good wine or whiskey. At the time of serving the dessert, the table is filled with sweets. The most typical of the Hogmanay is the black bun, a cake filled with candied fruit, nuts and spices and very dense texture. Another sweet present at this time are the mince pies, tartlets filled with fruit and spices.
It is usually celebrated two days on January 1 and 2, the largest celebration of the Hogmanay takes place in the city of Edinburgh. Which is a spectacular three-day party that brings together more than 100,000 participants including concerts, torch parades, dancing, etc. However, this is not the only city that celebrates it, other cities such as Aberdeen, Glasgow and Stirling, bet on their own celebration of Hogmanay. Among all of them, one of the most special traditions is the Festival of the fireballs of Stonehaven, a small town near the castle of Dunnottar.
Italy
On the other hand, in Italy they have several traditions in each of their cities. To begin in that country the end of the year, it is known as San Silvestro, and new year, that is, on January 1 as Capodanno. Like Scotland and Ecuador, people gather for dinner and the skies of the cities are filled with spectacular fireworks. The first custom is to eat a plate of lentils during dinner to start the year well, a custom that derives from an old ritual that consists of giving a purse full of lentils to loved ones, hoping that one day these vegetables transform into coins, this symbolizes prosperity. Lentils are not missing in the New Year's Eve menu of Italian houses, but hardly anyone forgets to wear red underwear for the occasion, garments that are usually given at Christmas and in this case guarantees a new year full of love. In addition there are other traditions present in Rome and Naples, which consists of throwing old objects through the window before midnight, this tradition intends to start the year detaching from what does not serve us. Another tradition is in the city of Bologna where the day of San Silvestro is celebrated the Fiera del Bue Grasso in which an ox is adorned with flowers and bows to be raffled just before dinner. The winner takes the animal home. Also that concerts are held all night.
